One-step mixing preparation of pH and salt stimuli-responsive biocompatible W/O/W emulsions

Fine tuning of pH and ionic strength determines which types of emulsion will form among oil in water, water in oil and W/O/W multiple emulsions. Consequently, stimuli-responsive, biocompatible, stable W/O/W multiple emulsions with remarkable encapsulation rate are easily prepared by a one-step mixing method and using a single poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) emulsifier. These multiple emulsions are promising platforms for designing drug delivery systems. Cryo-TEM pictures of the aqueous phase before mixing evidences that the W/O/W formation is correlated to the interfacial film curvature of the objects composing the water continuous microemulsion. Overall, the preparation method overcomes most of the difficulties associated to the making of biocompatible multiple emulsions.
